Its fascinating that the way advertizing and apps work right now is simply how computer viruses, adware, spyware, and all manners of malware has ALWAYS worked. Growing up as a teen in the 2000s there used to be a program called Weatherbug that was pretty much considered unthinkable to ever have installed because of the way it knew your location and essentially EVERY adware, spyware, and antivirus software flagged it for removal immediately. It was considered best practice to never install anything. Never install toolbars, mever install anything without consulting a professional or unless you were ad advanced user. I was trained in Comptia A+ for the windows xp era and the best practice as a repair tech was to never allow the customer to install anything themselves if it could be helped.

And now just. Everything does this. Your fucking calculator wants your location data and business ghouls want it to ve illegal to use a simple adblocker because not advertizing to you hurts their feelings.

And now we have generative AI filling the internet witg slop that can have SEO and more ads slapped on top of it? Google is breaking on purpose so you make more searches?

The viruses have won, everything is malware and everything is a scam. To use commercial tech is to be voluntarily mugged

The world exists in such a baffling state of simultaneous sex-aversion and sex-hegemony. Every social platform on the internet is trying to banish sex workers to the shadow realm but I can't post a tweet without at least two bots replying P U S S Y I N B I O. People are self-censoring sex to seggs and $3× but every other ad you see is still filled with half-naked women. Rightwingers want queer people arrested for so much as existing in the same postal code as a child and are also drumming up a moral panic about how teenage boys aren't getting laid enough. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I still vividly remember sitting at a bus stop downtown scrolling through endless Tumblr discourse about kink at Pride and whether leather daddies were appropriate. To my left, there was a giant ad that took up the whole side of the bus stop advertising a bag collection for some high-end brand. It was a black and white shot of a model who was completely nude, sitting on a chair, her legs spread wide open while she clutched a bag in front of her crotch and positioned her arms in just the right way to cover her nipples.

Nobody even batted an eye. No discourse was made about this. Life just went on.

one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.

which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:

  • what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it
  • what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)
  • what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes

and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts

#that makes sense#this is pretty true of all the toxic people ive met in trek fandom#they're either on some petty bs over their very specific hc interpretation of a character or whether people like their fanfic#or clout chasers who want to be ''in charge''#the funny part is half the time these people don't even seem to know all that much about the source material#listen the weird freaks like me who just obsess over it 100 percent of the time don't want drama we just want to#sit here and catalogue every type of starship or imagine what a breen looks like#think up ways to win the temporal wars or whatever#ppl will tell me they don't like star trek or they've never seen it & they look at me like im gonna attack them#no no im just a weird goblin petting my trinkets. i want to show them to you but why would i be mad that you don't like them as much?#i know im a weirdo :D#fandom
