Posterity - Chapter 5 (The End)

Jason knew something had happened as soon as he walked through the door and met Dick’s red- rimmed eyes. The mix of contradicting emotions that had been swirling in Jason’s chest for the past half an hour were the reason he’d raced home from checking his safe house stocks in the first place. 

“Dickie?”

“Tim called. They-” Dick stopped and took a deep breath. “They found Bruce. He’s at the Watchtower and he’s asking for us.”

Jason’s mind went blank. 

“Little wing?” Dick approached slowly, as if Jason was a skittish horse.

“Dick, I-I-” Jason didn’t know what to do, or think, or how to put any of the memories and emotions that had been haunting him since Damian’s presentation into words. Jason didn’t even realise his breathing was picking up until Dick shifted forward and cupped his cheek in his palm. 

“We don’t have to go, we can wait until they’ve cleared everything and he’s back in Gotham.” Dick said, but Jason could feel the anticipation thrumming through him and knew he was itching to go. 

“No, no, I just- I need a few minutes.” Jason took several deep breaths and tried to sort his thoughts out. Dick stayed quiet and let him think, running his fingers through Jason's hair and helping him focus. “We should go, get it over with. But I don’t want Damian there, not yet, not until we know how he’s going to react.”

“Okay.” Dick agreed, quick enough that Jason knew he’d been worrying about it as well. “We can call Steph to get him from school and she won’t mind keeping him for a sleepover if we end up spending longer up there.”

“Damian and Steph having a sleepover? I think that’s a recipe for un-Alfred approved chaos.” Jason snorted. 

Dick laughed. “They could use some fun.” 

“Yeah.” Jason agreed as he pushed himself back up. “Let’s just get this over with before I change my mind. We better use blockers, I’d rather not be immediately launched into a lecture before we get our bearings.”

Jason frowned at his bagel as his phone chimed with the noise that meant one of his safehouses had been broken into. As luck would have it, he was in the deli around the corner from the library, which meant he was only two blocks away. He shoved the rest of his bagel into his mouth and hightailed it down the street. He swung up onto a fire escape when he reached the right block and made his way over to the rooftop access he’d installed when he’d taken over this top floor corner apartment. He couldn’t actually remember the last time he’d used this apartment, probably when he and Tim had used it to hide from some of Black Mask’s men about two months before Damian had shown up. 

Jason typed the code into the panel as he pulled his gun out from under his jacket. He checked it was loaded before pulling the door open and slowly walking down the stairs. But whatever he was expecting, it was not Tim Drake bleeding all over the floor. 

“Shit.” Jason flicked the safety back on the gun after surveying the room for threats and dropped to his knees next to Tim to assess the damage. 

“Hey, Jase.” Tim slurred his eyes struggling to track Jason. 

“What happened?” Jason demanded, poking at what turned out to be a hole in Tim’s side that had been stitched but had reopened before pulling the first aid kit out from under the couch. 

Tim blinked at him. “League.”

Jason’s heart jumped into his throat. “Are they here? In Gotham?”

Tim nodded before whining as Jason packed the wound as tight as he dared. Jason raced into the bedroom and grabbed a slightly dusty hoodie, forcing Tim into it to disguise most of the blood. 

“Then we can’t stay here.” Jason said as he holstered his gun before hooking an arm under Tim’s knees and behind his shoulders. Tim whined again before Jason got him situated. “There’s a car in the garage and the Penthouse should be safe.” Jason narrated as he walked out of the apartment, barely making sure the door was shut behind them. As soon as they were in the garage, he deposited Tim in the passenger seat of the beat up old chevy as gently as possible before climbing in, thanking his past self for keeping the tank full, and setting off.

Jason was surprised by how quickly they fell into a routine again once he moved back in, but he was more surprised by how quickly they fell into being a family. Him and Dick and Damian and Alfred, with Steph and Babs stopping by multiple times a week. But everyone's reactions to the news that Dick would be hanging up the cape and cowl couldn’t have been more varied. 

Alfred had simply nodded and told Dick he was glad he was embracing the identity he’d created for himself. Steph had a similar reaction, just with more yelling and hugs involved. Babs had argued at first, or so Dick had told him, Jason hadn’t actually been present for that conservation. But she’d eventually come around to seeing Dick’s viewpoint and admitted she knew how miserable they’d both been during the last few months. 

The main issue was Damian.

Damian who had been raised as heir to not only the Al Ghuls, but also as the heir to the Bat. Damian who had spent barely a month with his father before he was gone. Damian who viewed the cape and cowl as his birthright. 

Jason lightly rapped his knuckles on Damian’s door, pointedly ignoring Dick who was hovering anxiously in the doorway to their room. “Dami, can I come in?”

Jason made no move until he heard a muffled yes . The scent of upset pup raked against all his maternal instincts but he forced himself to approach slowly and not just scoop his pup up and thoroughly scent him until he didn’t smell like that anymore. Damian was curled up in the middle of his bed underneath a blanket he’d stolen from Jason’s nest at some point, so Jason gently sat down on the edge of the bed, not too close, but not too far either. 

“I do not understand.” Damian said, sounding small. 

“The bat, everything it stands for, especially for me and Dick, it’s complicated.” Jason started. “It’s the reason we created our own identities, so we could be our own people out of his shadow, even if mine started a little more violently than Dick’s. Nightwing, though, means as much to Dick as Robin does. It’s his way of staying connected to his parents and performing without the circus. Putting on the cowl means giving up everything he enjoys about what we do and becoming someone neither he nor I recognise.”
