May I humbly request some words of encouragement from my favourite fic author? I have to finish a fic swap for my close associate by the end of the month and I so do not want to. Save me your highness, save me
Aw, haha, I feel you - I've been in a lot of zines and exchanges and other events where you have to write for a specific prompt or audience, and it's always harder than just when you're able to do whatever you want. Whenever I feel like I don't have any motivation at all to work on a fic, assuming it's something I'm at least generally interested in as a writing concept, that often means it's time for me to sit down and figure out what's putting me off of it.
Oftentimes, I've just hit a point in the story that's kind of boring, so the solution is to shorten it or even just turn it into a transition and exclude it entirely. Other times, I've ended up in a place where the characterization or plot is clunky or doesn't make sense, so I have to backtrack a little. Regardless of what it is, it can help to take a minute and genuinely look at what you're writing and why, exactly, you don't actually want to write it. What part of it is unappealing to you? And how can you either exclude it, or make it more appealing?
I hope that you find your motivation! Exchanges are my favorite fandom events, because I really love that we're just out here making presents for one another.
