mithrun, who became what he became because of the hatred he held for his brother. mithrun, who is here today, living and fighting, because of the love his brother holds for him.

falin, who became what she became because of the love she holds for her brother and friends. falin, who is here today, living and happy, because her brother and friends risked everything they were to bring her home.

thistle and delgal who became what they became because the line between love and selfishness is often indistinguishable.

kabru and rin. kuro and mickbell. chilchuck and his family.

love and violence follow each other in an endless parade. and sometimes it is not so easy to see which deals the damage.

Kabru and Mithrun's initial lack of interest in each other is actually helpful for the both of them in different ways. They end up giving each other exactly what they need as a result.

Kabru realises that Mithrun doesn't care about him, that there's basically no threat, so he drops his guard and stops being manipulative while they're together, which is a bit of fresh air seeing as this is all we've seen of him so far. For once Kabru seems to feel safe with a person (at least safe enough to be honest about why he's in the dungeon, what he wants out of his mission, to smile genuinely and eat food made of weird ingredients together etc). As a result Kabru's analytical skills aren't directed at figuring out Mithrun's motivations so he can use them against him, but figuring out what's wrong with him so he can help him. And he ends up helping him so well that even other people comment on it.

The way they play off each other is really interesting in this sense. I think what it boils down to is that they've both been mistreated by elf society. Kabru has been patronised and his very real concerns and passions about dungeons and his trauma has been dismissed by elves. His way of doing things has been completely overlooked because "elves know better because we're long lived", resulting in him feeling the need to go about things indirectly and through psychological tactics. While Mithrun, for all he's been taken care of, has had bold assumptions made about him such as not being able to sleep and not being able to form new desires/his only remaining desire being revenge, which Kabru overcomes by taking a different approach to caring for him. Kabru cares for Mithrun not by patronising him or assuming his needs from a superior standpoint, but by enabling him to do what he can, and that's incredibly powerful and counts for caring for people with disabilities in real life too.

Essentially, Kabru and Mithrun kind of help heal each other in different ways and in ways that feel totally natural to their characters. They give each other what they need having both grown up in elf society and been outcasts in different ways from that society. They have a yin/yang dynamic going on where Mithrun helps Kabru passively but enables Kabru to drop his guard and in turn help Mithrun more actively, but neither form of help is more important/better than the other and the cycle just goes around and around.

The beauty of Mithrun, a man (an elf!), who feels no desire whatsoever asking Kabru, a man who's suffered because of elves looking down on him, what HE wants, is not lost on me.

Then smiling so gently as he accepts his decision and lets him take the lead, trusting him... Poetry.

Dungeon Meshi World Map

REGIONS (Descriptions taken from the Adventurer's Bible)

WESTERN CONTINENT

Description: Bears the most scars from the ancient war. It has many monsters and ruined dungeons, and although it's vast, there are surprisingly few habitable areas. Most of the inhabitants are sturdy, short-lived races and demihumans. Elven culture has had a strong influence here. Characters: Kabru and Kuro Places of Note: Utaya Dungeons of Note: The Utaya Dungeon, The Dragon's Lair

NORTHERN CENTRAL CONTINENT

Description: The continent that is home to the largest nation, ruled by the queen of the elves. The term "Western Elves" mostly indicates elves from this region. It's the safest area and life is easy here, but its shrinking population has dangerously weakened it. Characters: Mithrun (and the Canaries) Places of Note: Western Elves's Royal District, Canarie's Headquarters. Dungeons of Note: Central Watchtower

SOUTHERN CENTRAL CONTINENT

Description: The area with the second-largest elf nation. It has more inbound immigration than the Northern Central Continent and a rather disorganized atmosphere. While it's in an alliance with the Northern Central Continent, they really aren't on good terms. Characters: - Places of Note: - Dungeons of Note: -

EASTERN CONTINENT

Description: Home to the largest gnome nation. Once dwarfs and gnomes made up the majority of the inhabitants, but in recent years there has been an influx of short-lived races from the Northern Continent and Eastern Archipelago, and the population is growing rapidly. It's a melting pot where various cultures are jumbled together. Characters: Chilchuck Tims (Kahka Brud), Senshi (Izganda) Places of Note: Magic School, The Island/Melini, Kahka Brud, Izganda, Dozahk, Bonnario, Sadena Dungeons of Note: Island, Brud Dungeon Cluster, Budou Pit, Tower of Night Cries

NORTHERN CONTINENT

Description: A severely cold continent where over half of the land is covered in perpetual snow. The majority of the inhabitants are short-lived races, particularly tall-men, but the population isn't large to begin with. It has been strongly influenced by dwarf culture. Characters: Laios & Falin, Marcille Places of Note: - Dungeons of Note: -

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO

Description: An area where short-lived races live. As a result of a pact, there has been no interference by long-lived races for a very long time. The effects of the ancient war are slight, and they have almost no trouble with monsters or dungeons, but there's constant strife among humans. Characters: (all from different Islands) Izutsumi, Shuro and his Retainers, Rinsha Fana (Not shown) Places of Note: Island of Wa Dungeons of Note: -

SOUTHERN CONTINENT

Description: Home to the largest dwarf city. Gnome and dwarf nations often build down rather than out, and the innermost layers are extraordinarily deep. War still erupts frequently, and there are never-ending disputes near the borders. Characters: - Places of Note: - Dungeons of Note: -

Okay I think I'm ready to write the second part of this post about Milsiril

To make it easier for me I'll just divide this into her relationship with Kabru, Mithrun and Helki (her ex-canary prisoner teammate)

First about Kabru

This is an extra from the daydream hour 5. The caption says "Something like this might as well have happened" so its probably not canon but could be. I honestly think his reaction to Milsiril visiting and being overbearing says a lot about the type of relantionship they have. This is the fakest bitch in the whole of dungeon meshi, he never says what he trully thinks unless there's an advantage to doing so, he's a people pleaser that does and says anything to make people like/trust him. And yet he immediatly converts into "Mooooooom you're embarassing meeeeee" when he sees it's Milsiril.

This translation used "Mom" but as I understand the original he uses the more formal version so I think it would be closer to "Mother" but still he acknowleges her as his Mother, and he acts like her kid in every interaction we see between them.

I really don't understand where the idea that he learned to be fake from being "forced" to be her adoptive son comes from.

(Continuing under a cut)

Someone's upset because their dear husband kept bringing his work at home (they later made up though)

I like the idea of domestic kbms where msrn is the stay at home hubbie (who fights monsters on the side) and kbr the working hubbie and they both work to keep their home cozy and happy for the two of them but i can see msrn getting upset when kbr pushes himself too far

((also if anyone likes that domestic kbms dynamic i recommend the ff: fics: here and here))
