the scariest thing about old tv isnt really the racism or the sexisim because you kinda go in braced for that it's all the scenes where suddenly an actress is holding a lion cub or a chimpanzee is in the same room as a toddler, or suddenly theres a lion, or there's a chimpanzee again but it's driving a car, or holding a lighter, or holding fireworks. You just kind of watch in horror as over and over an actress performs with only 1960s tv film shootings best animal handling between her and the opening to Nope.

This is how I learn that the famous chimp my dad got my nickname from tried to kill Reagan. Fuck yeah.

Get a hobby that is intergenerational.  The friendships with people much older and much younger than you will mean that wisdom and ideas are shared among many and not isolated among the few.

for the purposes of this poll, the north american black bear & the asian moon bear are both "black bears". two of the best known brown bear subspecies are north american grizzly bears and eurasian brown bears, but there are many brown bears!

being chronically ill with fluctuating symptoms is so annoying because when it's at it's worst im like "okay i desperately need some type of mobility aid right now, i haven't been able to leave my house in days" but then i'm able to go for a walk one day and suddenly i feel like im exaggerating my symptoms and that i actually can walk fine and it would just be embarrassing and pointless to ask for a mobility aid assessment

but like ... not struggling as much one day doesn't take away from the days that i struggle the most

our pain is valid even when it's not at it's worst and we deserve the accommodations we need even if we don't always need them at all times

Hey y'all. Since I just saw someone use "wheelchair bound" in tags, a reminder that this is not a kind or correct phrase. Mobility devices do not bind us, they free us.

Please use, for example, "Hephaestus uses a wheelchair," or "Hephaestus is a wheelchair user."

This is specifically not a callout, which is why no one is tagged, and I'm not using screenshots. This is me taking an opportunity to educate, not me yelling at someone. 💗

I have never taken the time to examine that phrase and... yeah, I'm realising now that I've only ever heard the term "wheelchair bound" used to make being in a wheelchair seem like a terrible fate.

News reports will say things like "a car crash left him wheelchair bound" in a clear attempt to make the audience feel bad for them. And like, sure losing the use of your legs in a car accident isn't good, but talking about wheelchair users like that is also not good, regardless of why they're in the chair.

It's things like this that remind me that ableism comes in many forms, and is sometimes baked into things that most people don't bat an eye at.

so weird how in english some words are really just used in expressions and not otherwise… like has anyone said “havoc” when not using it in the phrase “wreaking havoc”? same goes for “wreaking” actually…
