Erwin Smith is the warrior Duke of Milan and patron of art. He is a young, passionate leader who wishes to fulfill his father’s dreams by defeating the enemies of his state.

Levi Ackerman is a notorious condottiero who is pledged to Milan. He commands an elite group of mercenaries and defends the borders from the French. He is rumored to be the secret lover of the young Duke.

Hange Zoe is an incredibly talented artist and a war engineer. They work under the patronage of the Duke.

Nanaba is the Lady of Imola and a distant cousin of Erwin. She needs Erwin’s support to protect her small but strategic lands from the Roman threat.

Mike Zacharias is an adventurer count and Erwin’s closest friend. He was sent to Imola to help out Nanaba and he immediately fell in love with her.

Yes, Erwin, keep smiling and freak them all out.

Look at this man. I mean, really, look at him. Personally, I’d shudder to have an enemy like this– a one-armed man trussed up and beaten bloody, but smiling, even for the briefest of seconds.

Is he mad? He might be. He might even be thinking he deserves this, if you know his personal history and his belief that he unwittingly betrayed his father when he was a child.

But that’s not the point of that smile.

The point is, this man is not afraid. He is dauntless, he is not scared of facing death. Perhaps he even welcomes it.

If I have an enemy like this, I’d quake. He is not afraid of anything thrown his way. Not hell or high water, certainly not bodily harm. Inside that bruised and broken body, his mind and spirit are intact, indomitable.

Letting him live would be a mistake. Killing him would be an even worse one for all the ideas his death might unleash. The man is not like the others. He is martyr material. You can silence his body but not his soul.

So be scared. Be very scared if you know how to read the signs, because that smile is THE sign

If I were the king, lounging on his throne, I wouldn’t be so complacent in front of this man kneeling before me, seemingly defenseless.

Because in truth, he is formidable. Powerful. In truth– and nobody could have guessed, least of all a person such as myself– he has a plan, and the crown resting on my head is all but hollow to this sort of man, who holds my destiny in his hand.
