it's so funny to me that conservatives think the reason university students become more liberal is because of the actual course material and not like. the fact that universities in the US introduce are oftentimes the first place Americans are introduced to a walkable environment with affordable health care, with community spaces for any affiliation under the sun where they give you free resources and cheap food. with included public transit and opportunities for training in your field of choice. and you realize that for how much you're spending on tuition/taxes, yeah, you do deserve these things, it would be insane not to have those. and then you graduate and go back to having to buy a car to drive 20 minutes to the grocery store.

It's also one of the first places a lot of people raised in insular, conservative areas meet "the other". People of other ethnicities and cultures, people of other religions, other gender presentations, sexualities, etc. You get to know them and start realizing how much of what you "knew" about them was myth or straight-up propaganda.

It's a lot harder to demonize queer people when the person helping you pass calculus is a trans woman, or your lab partner talks about his boyfriend exactly the same way you talk about yours. It's a lot harder to believe that immigrants are out to get you when your Hindu roommate cheerfully shares a care package of homemade goodies from home, or Malia down the hall covers your lunch because you forgot to bring your wallet to study group. You start rethinking some assumptions when the 6 foot spike-encrusted goth who sits behind you in lecture hall shows everyone photos of his baby niece dressed like a puppy for Halloween with all the pride of a new parent, and you remember when your flannel and camo-wearing uncle did the same thing at work last year with photos of your little sister.

Suddenly all those "others" are just people. They're your friends, classmates, coworkers, and maybe even romantic interests. And that's a lot harder to hate or fear.

honestly, i wish when i was a kid adults had said to me "lying is a thing most people do quite a bit of in social situations, its going to be useful to know how and when to do it, because if you dont you will often seem rude and offputting" instead of just "its bad to lie dont lie" because. guess who often seems rude and offputting.

dentists will splash some water in your mouth and youll think "oh a nice drink of water i was parched" just for them to suck it back out with their wretched little tube. disingenuous behavior

There's people for whom "we're leaving in the morning" means "we ride at dawn motherfuckers, you can finish waking up and getting dressed in the car, we'll grab breakfast somewhere along the way", and there's people for whom it means "we'll get going somewhere before noon".

And then they get married.

This is real parents' choice, not the BS “Parents choice for mine AND yours” that Mommy Fascism League supports.

i noticed something in both Psych and House that I find interesting. Overall I enjoyed the later seasons of both shows less than the earlier seasons. And if I had to pinpoint why it's the loss of structure as the shows go on.

Both House and Psych start of with an extremely similar episodic format. There is a case they need to solve, and in between case related scenes we get character development. This character development occurs in small doses, and builds over time.

We learn bits of backstory about characters, see flashes of their lives and relationships, but it's all background to the case. But as the seasons go on the focus begins to shift instead of 10% of the episode being about the characters personal drama it's 20% and then 40% until the case isn't really important anymore and our main characters barely interact with it. Too busy with their interpersonal situationships.

And it's strange to me, that as much as I thrive on the bits and pieces we learn in the earlier seasons, I grow bored when the structure begins to breakdown. I love seeing House and Wilson's relationship in snapshots, and bits, but it was never meant to be the main plot. Same for Psych.

Casual observation from someone old enough to remember: in the year 2000 financial advice was that rent should be no more than 1/4 of your income.

Until the mid 80s, the advice was that if you must rent instead of owning, then that 20% of your monthly income (oh yes, only 20%) should include all your utilities too.

After all, rent costs more than a mortgage, so it should offer more too.

The housing market is a fucking travesty.

Hmm what happened in the mid eighties....

Sorry, I could never be a capitalist, I suffer from “wanting humans to have their basic needs met” disorder, where I care about people who aren’t me.

Someone once asked me if, assuming we got universal healthcare, I would be okay with the rise in “healthcare tourism” where people who are sick come to our country to get their medical bills taken care of and life-saving medical treatment cheaper than in their home countries. I was just like, yeah thats fine, I’d actually prefer it if 0 people died from preventable causes kept behind a paywall for no reason.

“even the addicts?” yeah dude did i fucking stutter
