“It Is an Honor to Be Suspended for Palestine”

Dispatches from the Solidarity Encampment at Columbia University

In this in-depth report, participants offer a blow-by-blow account of the events at Columbia, appraising the tactics that the demonstrators have employed and the challenges that they face.

since the white house put out a ridiculous statement condemning the protests i want to reiterate again that many of the students involved are jewish, there has always been a large jewish presence at these protests in nyc and in campus organizing for palestine

the stuff going on at columbia campus rn is genuinely incredible

despite mass arrests by NYPD and several students (including rep ilhan omar’s daughter, isra hirsi) being suspended for their participation and having their university identification deactivated, the gaza solidarity encampment is still going strong well into its second day. def recommend following independent reporter talia jane who is taking part and providing live updates. (talia was the first reporter to break aaron bushnell’s self immolation in february; she was one of the reporters he contacted personally prior to the protest.)

thank you so much alexa @shivsblunt for mentioning it…..anyone who wants to contribute to their jail support fund can do so @ bcabolitioncollective on v*nmo. also, if anyone is in the area and available to join (via cssw4palestine on ig):

It's still kinda wild how Phineas and Ferb managed to completely hijack an idiom. Now whenever someone hears a sentence leading with "If I had a nickel for everytime [...]", odds are their brain auto fills with "I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice," rather than "I'd be rich," or "I could [action that requires purchasing something requiring an obscene amount of money]". Y'know, what the idiom originally was

the thing is, the phineas and ferb version is just so much funnier and more actually applicable

original idiom is "anything that happens a lot"

p&f version is "weirdly specific thing that happens more times than would really make sense"

tired: mermaids are all women

wired: much like elves, merfolk are mistaken by sailors for being all women because they have long hair and are very pretty

inspired: merfolk actually have very different concepts of gender to humans because they’re an entirely different species with their own unique culture

marine scientist: what’s your gender?

merperson: what’s a gender

marine scientist: like, are you a man or a woman?

merperson: i’m merfolk

marine scientist: no, like, what’s in your pants?

merperson: i don’t… wear any? i don’t have legs?

It’s a biological fact that fish do indeed change their sex to keep the male/female ratio balanced in their school population. So this fluidity actually makes more sense from a scientific standpoint than the silly idea that merfolk are born with a strictly assigned sex like humans.

Merfolk are all canonically genderfluid and we love them for that

Human: (invites merfolk friend to a boat party with their friends)

Merfolk: oh man, there are a lot of women here. Haha don’t worry guys, I got this :) *changes into a man to keep a balance because that’s culturally polite for merfolk*

Human: (spits drink) what the FUCK

OH MY GOD

So in the presence of a ship with an entirely or mostly male crew, nearby mermaids would become female to keep the balance.

That’s it. We figured out why everyone thinks merfolk are all women. Get a boat of fems out there and let’s see what they report.

there’s nothing wrong with finding gay sex sexy, even if you’re straight. sex is sex. if a woman is attracted to men, it stands to reason that she might get turned on watching two dudes mack each other’s faces off. vice versa. that’s neither weird nor news to anyone. what is weird and fucked up is consuming queer sexuality without respect for the very-real human beings who are having the queer sex

and yes, that shit is prevalent and aggravating as hell! i get it. but criticizing how people derive pleasure (“she’s evil because she thinks gay-man-sex is hot even though she’s a woman”) rather than how they abuse power (“she thinks gay-man-sex is hot, and consumes queer media in queer spaces, but she also maintains that lesbians are gross and weird and uses her platform to talk over them”) is a recipe for weird puritanical nonsense that solves zero problems and in fact creates several new ones

if right here right now, i stopped having fun

i found a normal job and worked longer than the sun

worked 60+ hours, in between going to class

like the olds say to do, well, this will sound crass

i would rather go to the top of a building and dive

even if i did that, i still couldn’t afford to survive

i could maybe afford my apartment

but only that, no tuition no home, just rent

if all i ever did was work, what’s the point in life?

if i never saw my friends, my relievers of strife,

i promise you i would not live past the fortnight

you see elders, technically you’re right

but you would only be able to gloat for maybe a week

before you found my body, and then call me weak

why are we punished for having friends

it’s not like i’m poor for following the trends

if life is simply working until i die

then please don’t miss me, and don’t cry

The thing that abled people who advocate for the disabled community don’t get is that there are times when disabilities/accommodations clash. Horribly.

Like I spent years having to come up with a solution to get therapy dogs into a series of residence halls. Why years? Because we had to decide who got to stay and who got to leave: the people who needed therapy dogs or the people with severe allergies to animals. Who got the alternative housing?

Things like fidget toys might seem great for some disabled people but having them in the room could be distracting/overstimulating for others. The same goes with stimming. It can’t be helped but neither can the anxiety that another person in the room feels as they watch/hear it. Additionally, something like a weighted blanket might immediately calm one kid down and send the other one into a panic attack due to the claustrophobia it causes. (*Points to myself*)

Every Metro bus in New York City has a series of seats at the front that can be lifted up to accommodate people in wheelchairs but if I’m in one of those spots then someone with a cane/walker has to journey even further to sit down.

The flashing lights of a fire alarm are there to help deaf/hearing impaired but if they’re not properly timed, they can also cause a person to have a seizure.

The worst part about all of these is that there is rarely a concrete solution that makes everyone happy/safe. And I’m not here to offer any because I don’t know them. I’m just here to remind you all that as you’re taking your education/health classes, as you’re reading your textbooks, as you’re preparing to go be an advocate, just remember that there is rarely ever such a thing as a one-size-fits-all solution to advocacy and that something you do that can help one disabled person might actually hinder another.

Food for thought.

one of my friends is hard of hearing and i’m extremely sensory sensitive. when the fire alarm goes off my friend has a much better chance of survival since the lights will cover the fact that he can’t hear the alarm as well.

i however, would die without a buddy because fire alarms cause me to meltdown faster than the knowledge of “get out get out” hits me. the two times i have been in a building with a fire alarm that goes off, i had to be guided out by a person that knew that i couldn’t function to any degree with an alarm going off.

the same thing that would help save my friend would probably kill me.
