I remember when someone on a discord server called archaeology my “special interest” and I didn’t know how to explain, rookie mistake! It’s actually a Master’s degree

I’m starting to get the sense that some of you think only autistic people have interests

#Is archaeology/history my ‘special interest’? Idk maybe. I don’t really define it that way but it could fit#but the point is more that study and mastery of a subject is in fact possible even if it’s not your biologically unique Special Interest™#That saying I know things about archaeology because it’s my ‘special interest’ is kind of demeaning to my professional study and experience#And enforcing this weird dichotomy between people who are capable of having interests and expertise and people who are not#Admittedly I fundamentally don’t believe that many forms of ADHD and many of the tumblr-acceptable forms of autism are materially distinct#But there’s this weird anti-intellectualism response I’m seeing where expertise is only allowed to come from ‘special interests’#Rather than study or experience

#also I don't think a lot of people on tumblr realize that neurotypical people can be very passionate about things#enough to make a career of them#and frequently do#like a lot of tumblr seems to srsly believe that NT people don't have interests or hobbies and it's so weird to me#like MOST people would prefer to have a career in something they are interested in it's not unique#and yeah a Master's in something is a huge difference from just an interest even a Special Interest#it does seem kind of insulting to call it that#to say nothing of tumblr's anti intellectual anti academia tendencies in general

As always: A low number of notes does not mean your work is bad or that it is not needed. There will always be at least one person out there digging for fics, who will come across your work, and be grateful that you wrote it!

The subreddit r/explainlikeimscared is a surprisingly good resource for this. People are always very kind and thorough from what I've seen, and I spend a decent amount of time there giving walkthroughs and answering questions when I know the process.
