have they asked tony to host or did they decide that would be too much of a disaster? pepper genuinely did host once, yeah? jay pharoah and cecily strong have a really excellent nick fury and maria hill duo, right? kate mickinnon does her best tony impression in a regularly scheduled “science corner with stark” segment, right? aidy bryant does a side-splittingly funny hulk, right?
I AM A FOOL FOR BEING EXCITED but I’m also excited anyway and Black Panther movie is go???

I am excited too. But I’m trying not to be? Like I know Stan Lee is only tangentially involved in the films so it’s not like its official confirmation. Aah.
I am stubbornly refusing to believe Stan Lee knows anything because he’s presenting it like eventually we will have movies of EVERY MARVEL SUPERHERO EVER.
Also because his argument is basically “These things are all in development! They’ll all exist eventually!” and I’m not really ready to get excited and then hear that the next franchise they confirm is Adam Warlock.
Today’s WidowWeek theme is Natasha in the MCU, which is fortuitous! Because the thing about the Cap2 prequel comic “Homecoming” (not to be confused with the Black Widow arc Homecoming, REALLY DID NO ONE THINK THIS THROUGH AT ALL) that I am kind of obsessing over is this quote from the writer:
In the comics Black Widow was an old timer from the cold war, but the modern Black Widow from the Marvel movies – played by Scarlett Johannes [sic]– is more recent. So here, it’s fun to play off the age difference between Natasha and Steve, and see her needle him for his age.
When I first saw the quote, it didn’t really phase me, but the more I think about it the more questions I have. Because if in the cinematic universe she isn’t significantly older than Bucky and Steve, how much of Natasha’s story does this change? And how much doesn’t it?
Dear white women feminists who loved Wonder Woman–
Listen, I also loved Wonder Woman. But I also think that Diana would be the first to note that we are not free until we are all free. So if you posted a thousand times about how important WW was for little girls to see, then I hope you are also prepared to post a thousand times about how important the new Black Panther movie is for black kids- girls and boys- to see.
I saw Wonder Woman, and I teared up the first time she stormed the battlefield in her full regalia. But, as a black woman, I couldn’t not notice that the women who looked like me played supporting, and largely non-speaking, background parts. Black Panther is the chance for women who look like me to see ourselves as the heroes in our own story. To see ourselves as warriors, as epic royalty, as fully actualized superheroes. In a major studio blockbuster, no less. Never- not ever- has that happened before.

The part of me that doesn’t learn lessons is thinking that Marvel will take the opportunity of Guardians of the Galaxy’s success to announce Black Widow or Black Panther or something.
The part of me that doesn’t learn lessons has yet to accept that the only hope in the MCU is there as a cheap replacement for Janet Van Dyne.
Both the first movie in Phase One of the MCU, and the last movie in Phase Three of the MCU, had a really important announcement to the public that fully disrupted the status quo.
Phase one began with a public statement: Tony Stark, at the end of Iron Man, holding a press conference to announce he’s Iron Man and introducing superheroes to the public.
Phase three ended with a public statement: T’Challa, at the UN, bringing Wakanda to the forefront of the universe (both within the MCU as fictional world and as product for us to consume) and changing the way his country operates on a global level.
In other words, the MCU started with a rich white man, already famous and well-known for his press conferences, being able to introduce something new, and challenging the world to accept it; both inside and outside the fictional universe, they did.
And the MCU to date ended with an African king, underestimated by so many, saying “Hey, this isn’t what you’re used to. But here we are, changing the way you see the world. We’re going to make it even better.” And while we haven’t seen the ramifications within the fictional universe, it’s certainly come true in ours.
