Just slapping some colour around. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get posts out this week because I’ve decided to tackle an ambitious painting! It’s for @mystrade-valentines, so it won’t get posted until February, but I’m starting early to make sure it is done on time.

Here’s a teeny little progress shot of a painting that appears in the background of my painting. Meta much?

The shot on the left is my initial flat colour. I’ve been finding it helpful when I begin a painting to lay down rough chunks of colour approximating the figures/layouts/clothes etc. It’s been helping me check proportions and because it’s just quickly slapped down colour I don’t feel married to it should I have to make big changes.

The shot on the right is just over half-way done. Honestly, a quarter of the painting will be covered up so I don’t know why I bothered painting the whole thing?

I’m using a screen cap for reference for the background and the figure is a combination of photos for reference.

First off, thank you to everyone who has liked or reblogged my art this year! I started in April and posted twice a week, every week, until sometime this fall! In 2017 I created more fanart than I had done in the ten years prior! So, thank you, for encouraging me to keep going.

I couldn’t possibly include all of the art I created this year in my summary so I picked twelve of my favourite, non-sketch Hobbit pieces (and it was hard to pick!):

I’m not 100% sure what I’ll be doing for 2018 or in what fandom(s). The Hobbit was a lot of fun but my takes on the characters/subject matter didn’t seem to resonate with very many people. Or maybe there aren’t a lot of people who like AUs in The Hobbit fandom? (Considering 90% of what I create is AU… Haha Imma never stop!) Or… maybe I just need to up my art game which is totally valid! I found that after a few weeks of producing work I quickly settled into an ‘art rut’ that I never managed to break out of.

I’ll figure it out eventually but in the meantime I think I’ll be concentrating on learning new art techniques, experimenting more, and maybe posting less ‘finished’ works and more of my art struggles and sketches in 2018.

Thank you, again. I feel so accomplished and satisfied this year! I almost feel like I am a creative person, again.

X marks the spot. I really liked the prompt for Flint strolling across a chart but because I’m lazy I drew him doing a stereotypical pirate map. I like to think he’s going through all of this effort to make a decoy map for idiots. It’s hard to tell but the paperweight is a rock with a fossil in it. It seemed like the sort of thing Flint might have hanging around.

I used a reference for his inkwell and quill!

I actually inherited an inkwell and a real feather quill! I simplified the inkwell for the sketch but thought you might like to see a photo of the one I used as reference.

Anyhow, Elrond when he was herald for Gil-galad! Man, those second age fashions sure were something, huh?

Painting is so hard, especially without line art! I used Photoshop and a couple of Kyle’s brushes: Oil detail brush 30px and the Oil lush brushes mostly. My second digital painting of 2018 and, really, ever. XD The only reference I used was the headless mannequin and puzzling over photos of Elrond’s head. There’s no way I could paint Hugh’s face accurately so I tried to just use some of the more defining features and hand-wave the rest.

*Foofs Aggressively* Yeah, that’s a foofy raven. All foofin’. Ridin’ around on Thorin’s shoulder and floofy-foofin’ at any elves she sees. While I was eating breakfast this morning I also wrote a Bagginshield fic that features this raven.

Just sort of mucking about with different ways to ink and colour and trying out  different brushes. The original pencil sketch was from 2016 and is one of my first attempts at drawing Thorin. (Which is why it was never properly finished off. First efforts are always a bit embarrassing. XD) This is just a screen shot of the upper-right corner of the full sketch.
