We’ve been trying to decide whether I should join Kristin at the tail end of a work trip to Brazil, which would line up perfectly with my spring break. I have enough frequent flyer miles, it’s just been a matter of getting on the same page about it - difficult with two busy people and a world of variables.
After a month deliberating, the first time we agreed to go for it was two days ago, and we quickly realized that getting the visa in time from the consulate in Chicago was basically impossible, or at least cutting it way too close to rest easily about it, even if I paid a courier $200. The only options short of that would be me driving to Chicago to get there at 9am today - 12 hours of totally lost time - or paying my unemployed brother $200 to do that for me. Everyone should have an unemployed brother, incidentally. Any other option would cost more than $200, which - as you can tell - is essentially the pain threshold here.
Yesterday afternoon, it occurred to me that MegaBus might have WiFi, and a red eye to Chicago. It does. 12 potentially wasted hours into 16 somewhat productive sleeping/working hours. $60. A somewhat new application of the idea that I can work from anywhere. Visa will be in hand by the end of the week, I meet my girl in Sao Paulo next Friday.
