I initially didn’t consider this a Destiel-parallel ep, but coming across a few posts I realise there’s a treasure-trove of comparisons. So let’s have a look at all the parallels between James and Dean, Portia and Cas, and their respective relationships in 8.15.
Firstly, James and Portia’s relationship seems to parallel our beloved Destiel ship by showing us a couple who is *not meant to be*, by anyone’s standards.
That is, A Witch and their Familiar aren’t suppose to fall in love and have sex, though they do share a *profound bond* and a kind of Love is certainly expected.
This, of course, reminds us of the profound bond shared by our Human Hunter and his Rebellious Angel. And how their relationship is frowned upon and ridiculed by most other angels (and demons) - such a strong connection between an Angel and a Human is deemed as a *betrayal* by those devoted to Heaven and Heaven alone - just as the Witch community are kept in the dark about the extent of James and Portia’s intimacy because it is frowned upon.
Portia, a *Familiar* - i.e. the Supernatural being in their partnership - is the one who sought out James. This reminds us of Cas being the one to seek out Dean. Furthermore, as this episode progresses, we realise that both James and Portia endure hardship in the face of adversity, but they power through to remain together because thier love is just so damn deep. And though there are dark and difficult times, and the events that led to James involving himself in the Supernatural underworld were negatively charged, if he had chosen a different course he would never had met Portia, his One True Love. Just like how if Dean had never gone to Hell, Cas would never have raised him from perdition and their love story would never have begun.
The title: Man’s Best Friend With Benefits.
Well, Cas is Dean’s best friend, as he mentions numerous times, even though they are of different species (as James and Portia are: one being born Human, the other a Supernatural being). And the *benefits* of Dean and Cas’ profound friendship, although not (yet) sexual, can arguably be considered *more than* what most friendships would experience. They are closer than friends, closer than family, yet hovering in some great expanse between what is and what could be (i.e. sexual intimacy).
James and Portia exploring their bond and expressing their love for one another through physical intimacy, offers a kind of *teaser* into what a future for Dean-and-Cas might look like: Their lives aren’t perfect; there are struggles and darkness, but they are together, and deeply in love. Also, their profound bond is what saves the day - Portia accessing the truth from James in an unshielded moment of passion and emotional vulnerability (during sex), and thereafter she is able to help him.
Yes. James can communicate telepathically with Portia.
Meaning, she can feel his thoughts and feelings without James consciously expressing them. This parallels Cas being able to pick up on Dean’s (mostly troubled) emotions - because even when Dean doesn’t explain what’s going on (which is often) Cas is still able to gleam the truth from him: the state of his soul. And he uses that as a guide to help comfort his Human. In short, Cas knows parts of Dean that are not always open or dealt with, parts no-one else knows or could possibly know. Thus Dean chooses to consciously confide in Cas in ways he would with no other, because Cas knows the worst of him and cares about him anyway. And so, Cas is able to save Dean, in numerous ways, again and again, because of the profound, soul-reaching bond.
Portia also has this fierce *stow-the-bigotry* attitude, wide intimidating eyes, a strong *I won’t take your bullshit* and *never back down from what is right* and *never give up on the one you love* resilience that reminds of Cas, if not a little more heated.
Going on that old *dogs are the most loyal breed* adage, Portia (a doggie shapeshifter) is entirely devoted to James - not just romantically (her heart, body and soul) but also when it comes to keeping him safe. She is fierce and caring and will go behind his back to seek help for his sake. She even turns her back on the entire Witch Community in order to be with James.
So, paralleling her behaviour, almost everything Cas does is to either help or protect Dean (the remaining percentage is of course Cas making amends for his wrongdoings and mistakes and to earn Dean’s forgiveness and love, but that’s something for another meta). Cas turned his back on Heaven and the Angels in order to be with Dean (or at least wanting to be with Dean t_t ).
The episode’s case all comes back to Portia in the end - another Witch trying to claim her for himself, by messing with James’ sanity and reputation. While the parallel isn’t clear-cut, this does remind of Naomi (and other angels) trying to claim Cas for themselves, use him for their own wants and needs.
And although not sexual, I can’t ignore the parallel manipulation and torment of *the one Portia loves*. For Dean is constantly threatened/condemned/almost killed by the angels for corrupting Cas, stealing him away form Heaven, and basically spitting on their rules in general, in the same way James goes against the Witch Community by *being with* Portia, and James being made to suffer because he *took something (someone) that didn’t belong to him*.
Portia is also portrayed as a kind of Beta to James’ Alpha, but without being made a submissive stereotype. The message to take away is that she is deeply loyal and devoted to James because she loves him. Because there is a mutual bond of trust, affection, respect and an *I don’t want to live without you* mentality that goes right to their core.
That parallels Cas and Dean. Because Portia is literally made of magic, as is Cas, and yet both James and Dean have a different, innate kind of *power* which trumps any Supernatural force: their Humanity.
(Yes, I know James is a witch, but Dean is a hunter - and those are learned-things, not born-things.)
We’re also reminded, once again, that Dean doesn’t like dogs.
Seeing as how Portia’s character represents Cas, the small leap can be made that Dean has an aversion to Cas - moreover, to Guys, when it comes to sexual intimacy. But Portia’s overt sexual appearance elicits certain desirable glances from Dean, the kind we know all too well from many moments with Cas. Though Dean is yet to make his move on Cas because something holds him back.
Portia being a Supernatural being, it’s specifically mentioned that what she does in the bedroom with James, despite their profound bond, *isn’t right*, i.e. it just doesn’t happen because *rules*. So, maybe the fact that Cas is an Angel is more of a hindrance to Dean acting on his attraction/feelings, than the fact that he is a *guy* (which he technically isn’t).
Cats make Dean sneeze.
Perhaps cats represent *women*, in that he doesn’t say he doesn’t like cats, though doesn’t profess love for them, either. Because despite sneezing around them, i.e. his body telling him, *you’re not comfortable, you’re not at ease*, It doesn’t bother him enough to specifically incite dislike. Whereas dogs don’t make him sneeze, yet his mind is telling him, *doesn’t matter, you’re not allowed to like them, just because*. Dogs represent Guys.
(Sam liking dogs, and wanting Dean to admit he likes dogs, is Sam showing his support for Dean’s sexuality/feelings, no matter who they are for. He wants Dean to admit he likes Cas/Guys. We all know he’s the #1 Destiel shipper. ^-^)
James’ surname is *Frampton*, like the musician, which parallels Dean using Rock-Aliases on cases.
Maybe there’s a little symbolism in this, about how James is comfortable enough in who he is to be in a real relationship with Portia. In contrast, Dean uses fake Rock surnames and is yet to make any kind of bold and definite statement or deed that proves he is Bi, or that he is in love with Cas.
(Yes, I’m making this statement having watched all the way up to 13.09. And yes, The Mixtape scene. But I’m talking on-screen, intentionally written, plain-as-day, bringing Dean firmly out of his closet and slamming the door behind him happenings - whether it’s for liking guys in general or lurving Cas.)
James and Dean also share the common ground of *unjust suffering*. Because James is made to believe he’s a killer, when he’s not. As Dean often thinks himself a monster for things he has done, but those around him, those who care about him such as Cas, assure him he’s not. Cas sees all the good stuff Dean refuses to acknowledge. Just as Portia reassures James, as well as fighting against her own people to prove it so. As Cas has done on countless occasions.
In closing, James and Portia would do anything for each other - go behind their backs, go against their own community, face off against evil, put themselves in harm’s way, all to protect their beloved. If that doesn’t sound like Dean and Cas, I don’t know what does.
Oh, and one last note:
Portia wears a (red) dog-collar throughout the episode (red symbolising passion and love but also warning). It seems to be like a *signature piece of attire*, but more that she has been *claimed*, that she has found her Familiar. Her heart/soul is *taken*. It reminds of Cas and his Trenchcoat: He always wears it, ever since taking Jimmy’s vessel, ever since he met Dean. Though there are a few alterations in its style over the years, it is definitely Cas’ *signature piece of attire*. Moreover, it could be argued that he attaches certain sentiment to it (as does Dean), to his time wearing it, to his time with Dean. In a significant way, Cas’ trench is a mark of his own heart, and wearing it always is like a way of letting the world know his heart is *taken*.
There’s probably way more parallels between Dean and James, and between the Witchy Stuff and Heaven, and the case and the boys’ lives, but this is all I could manage to assess right now. I may add more later. :)
