Character assassination is a deliberate and sustained process that aims to destroy the credibility and reputation of a person, institution, social group, or nation. Agents of character assassinations employ a mix of open and covert methods to achieve their goals, such as raising false accusations, planting and fostering rumors, and manipulating information.
Character assassination is an attempt to tarnish a person’s reputation. It may involve exaggeration, misleading half-truths, or manipulation of facts to present an untrue picture of the targeted person. It is a form of defamation and can be a form of ad hominem argument.
Republicans and Conservatives have spent over 20 years and billions of dollars smearing and lying about the Clinton family for political gain. They have thousands of websites, Faux “News,” conservative talk radio shows, newspapers (Like The NY Post, Washington Times, and The Wall Street Journal), magazines, movies, and countless books.
The GOP smear campaign has been fairly successful. At least half the country believes at least some of their lies, or at least enough to think that Hillary is dishonest and untrustworthy.

For years, an extreme-right online “news company” called WorldNetDaily has been pumping out staggering vol- umes of baseless conspiracy theories, end-of-the-world predictions, and “birther” attacks on President Obama. But its truly defining moment may have come with the fairy-tale claim that soy- beans cause homosexuality.
WND (formerly WorldNetDaily or, as it was affectionately known to its fans, WingNutDaily or WhirledNutDaily) is a far-right website and publisher founded by the ridiculously impressively mustachioed Joseph Farah in 1997, as a project of his Western Center for Journalism. WND espouses a fundamentalist Christian, creationist world view, with a healthy dose of jingoism. WND’s coverage provides multiple sides of the issues: the very conservative viewpoint and the ultra-conservative viewpoint. WND makes Fox News look positively moonbatty in comparison. Managing Editor David Kupelian claims that WND “serves as your watchdog on government 365 days a year. We guard your priceless freedoms by aggressively exposing corruption and evil everywhere, and by championing good.”
While they present themselves as news, WND is essentially a tabloid for radical right-wingers. Their publishing standards are rock-bottom, and they have run stories from extremely questionable sources on many, many occasions. WND are one of the earliest and longest running publishers of Ann Coulter’s insipid columns, as well as editorials from such august political analysts as Chuck Norris, Pat Boone and Charlie Daniels. The addition of editorials by disgraced baseball bigot John Rocker and an obsession with so-called “black mob violence” marked a shift from their less than subtle dog whistles into more overt racism.
The scary thing is, this bilge is actually slightly influential, with made-up bullshit from WND making its way out the mouths of wingnut congressmen and cable TV pundits far too often. Most notably, WND became ground zero for the Birther movement during the 2008 and 2012 Presidential Elections.

Our ruling
Trump said that Hillary Clinton “viciously” attacked women who accused Bill Clinton of abuse.
Bill Clinton certainly has been accused of sexual assault and having affairs. The record shows Hillary Clinton played a role in defending her husband, and that the Clintons’ first presidential campaign deployed tough tactics to defend against stories of consensual sex.
But in the cases of alleged abuse by Broaddrick, Willey and Jones, Hillary Clinton was largely silent. The words she allegedly had with Broaddrick are subject to interpretation. Approving the release of Willey’s letters does qualify as an attack, but using a person’s words against them is a fairly tame tactic. And Clinton did not attack Jones directly.
Overall, we rate the claim Mostly False.

Allegation: Former Arkansas employee Paula Jones sued Bill Clinton for civil money damages in 1994 alleging that Clinton had propositioned her in a Little Rock hotel room years earlier. Clinton fought the case, but the Supreme Court ruled that the lawsuit could proceed. In the course of the long and bitter litigation, Jones’s lawyers identified other women with whom Bill Clinton allegedly had intimate relationships. They included Gennifer Flowers, a cabaret singer whose contacts with Clinton were detailed in a tabloid report, and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
Outcome: In a deposition for the Jones civil lawsuit, in early 1998, Bill Clinton denied having “sexual relations” with Lewinsky. Her name had already come to the attention of Independent Counsel Ken Starr, who sought her cooperation in his own investigation. Months later, in front of a federal grand jury, Clinton acknowledged the personal relationship with Lewinsky and later appeared on television to offer a public apology. The statement failed to head off a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach the president. Clinton settled the Jones lawsuit for $850,000 but he did not acknowledge wrongdoing. In February 1999, the U.S. Senate acquitted Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice.
3. Vandalized and looted the White House
Our ruling
A viral graphic said that Hillary Clinton was forced to return about $200,000 worth of furniture, artwork and china that she had stolen from the White House. The statement contains several inaccuracies.
The Clintons returned about $48,000 in furniture, and they paid the government about $86,000 for other items. Any way you count it, the $200,000 figure is too high.
According to top ethics lawyers, it’s at least debatable – and at worst hyperbolic – to say the Clintons “stole” the items. A congressional investigation found poor tracking of ownership and final disposition of gifts, which makes it hard to speak definitively of wrongdoing. In fact, two items the Clintons returned were ultimately sent back to them. Finally, it’s worth making clear that the “force” they responded to was political pressure, not legal jeopardy.
Accusations of stealing are serious and require a high threshold of evidence, unmet by the charges in this over-the-top graphic. We rate the claim Mostly False.

4. Filegate: FBI files on GOP enemies
Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr exonerated both the President and the First Lady with respect to the FBI files matter in 1998.
Based on an investigation that included the prior fingerprint analysis, the report further stated that:
“There was no substantial and credible evidence that any senior White House official, or First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, was involved in seeking confidential Federal Bureau of Investigation background reports of former White House staff from prior administrations of President Bush and President Reagan.”

Ray’s report also concluded that there was no credible evidence that Bernard Nussbaum testified falsely about not having discussed Livingstone’s hiring with the First Lady, and found as well that there was no personal relationship between the First Lady and Livingstone that had formed the basis for his hiring.

Separately from the Independent Counsel investigation, Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, engaged in long-running litigation over the White House personnel file controversy.
On March 9, 2010, Judge Lamberth dismissed the case. The judge asserted that the plaintiffs, despite years of opportunity, had failed to provide any evidence that the affair was a grand conspiracy rather than a bureaucratic mistake, and said that "this court is left to conclude that with the lawsuit, to quote Gertrude Stein, 'there’s no there there.’” Nussbaum, one of the defendants, derisively said “No kidding” when informed of the dismissal. Media reports concluded that, fourteen years after the initial events were set in motion, Filegate was finally over. In May 2010, Judicial Watch filed an appeal of the dismissal with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, but the Court of Appeals affirmed the dismissal on November 14, 2011, finally bringing the case to an end.

12. Whitewater: Jail for friends, but not Clintons
Independent Counsel Found “Insufficient” Evidence To Prove Clintons Committed Any Crimes. In September 2000, independent counsel Robert Ray concluded a six-year, $60 million investigation into Whitewater – a failed real estate deal in which the Clintons lost money – and found insufficient evidence to demonstrate that the Clintons had committed any crimes.
Numerous Government Investigations – Most Led By Republicans – Turned Up Insufficient Evidence To Charge The Clintons With Anything. As Media Matters has documented, investigations by special prosecutor Robert Fiske (a Republican), independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr (a Republican), former prosecutor Jay Stephens (a Republican), the House Banking Committee (chaired by Republican Jim Leach), and a Senate Whitewater panel (chaired by Republican Alfonse D'Amato) all failed to produce any evidence with which to charge the Clintons of any crime. Kenneth Starr’s Investigation Found No Evidence The Whitewater Billing Records Were Mishandled. In a report to Congress on the investigation into Whitewater, independent counsel Kenneth Starr admitted that he had not found any evidence to prove wrongdoing by the Clintons. The billing records that documented Hillary Clinton’s law practice and which were supposedly linked to the Whitewater case had been missing and were later found in the residential quarters of the White House, but Starr noted that after a “thorough investigation” he had not found any evidence to explain their temporary disappearance, or to link it to the Clintons. From NPR: Outcome: Neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton faced prosecution for their involvement in Whitewater. But their public statements about the matter, and the handling of documents that went missing and later reappeared, came under intense scrutiny. Their partners in the real estate investment were Jim McDougal and his then-wife Susan. Jim McDougal was convicted of fraud charges for making bad loans and he died of heart disease in a Texas prison. Susan was convicted of fraud in connection with obtaining a $300,000 federally-backed small business loan. She refused to answer grand jury questions in the Whitewater affair and was held in contempt of court, spending 18 months in jail. Bill Clinton pardoned her before he left the White House in early 2001.

Bill Clinton said his wife “was completely exonerated, when I was in the White House” by an official inquiry on Whitewater.
A December 1995 report by the independent law firm Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro report found no evidence of the Clintons’ and particularly Hillary Clinton’s participation in fraud. Pillsbury’s task was to assess whether federal regulators could justify a lawsuit legally and cost-effectively. The report found that they couldn’t, but the report and its authors didn’t and still don’t view their findings as exoneration.

President Bill Clinton was criticized for some of his pardons and acts of executive clemency. Pardoning or commuting sentences is a power granted by the U.S. Constitution to all sitting United States Presidents.
While most presidents grant pardons throughout their terms, Clinton chose to make nearly a third of them on January 20, 2001, his last day in office. This came to be known as Pardongate. While Clinton pardoned a large number (450) of people compared with his immediate predecessor Republican George H. W. Bush, who only pardoned 75, the number of people pardoned by Clinton was comparable to Republican Ronald Reagan and Democrat Jimmy Carter, who pardoned 406 and 566 respectively.
Federal prosecutor Mary Jo White was appointed to investigate the pardon of Marc Rich. She was later replaced by then-Republican James Comey, who found no illegality on Clinton’s part.
In October 2006, the group Judicial Watch filed a request with the U.S. Justice Department for an investigation, alleging that Rodham had received $107,000 from the Gregorys for the pardons in the form of loans that were never repaid, as part of a quid pro quo scheme.

Trump is referring to an audio tape in which she does respond with amusement at her recollections of the oddities of the case, which involve the prosecution and the judge.
At no point does she laugh at the victim.

These are both very complex situations that have been reduced to misleading sound bites. Clinton did defend an accused child rapist four decades ago, but at the request of the court –and she had a legal obligation to wage a solid defense of her client. The laughter on the tape is open to interpretation; certainly some might find it disturbingly lighthearted. But it’s a stretch to say she laughed about the sentence.
As for attacking sexual harassment victims, the timeline does not support the claim that Hillary Clinton attacked Lewinsky, knowing that her husband had had a relationship with her. The revelation came months later. The NRSC cited one quote, aimed apparently at Republicans, not victims, and thus it falls short. In the future, we expect we will explore other instances of “destroying” women cited by Clinton’s foes. The NRSC earns Three Pinocchios.
