We have underestimated...
the day they took down ricky pee pee
For my next (possible) bit of Biff goodness, I needed to make up a new character. The story came easy enough so I let myself go a bit when it. Normally, this is a fun idea and should be encouraged. This time… it might have landed me in a bit of hot water.
Without giving the whole damn thing away (you’ll get that soon enough), I set this chunk of story in the past - circa 1930’s. I needed a brand new female character that’s easy enough to draw with period style. As you can tell from her name, she will be a rabbit.
For a comic about a vampire, I sure do draw a lot of furry folks. o.O
Anyhoodle… I looked up a few photos of dresses I dug from that time. I boiled it down to two good ones -> This and That. Both pics come from the Art Deco blog and popped up through Google Image Search.
In an effort to get the basic shape/style/form of the dresses, I essentially cartooned them. I reproduced the pose as exact as I could without going all out realistic. What follows is how I drew them -
As you can already tell, I had a little too much fun with the second model’s expression. = P
For those who have seen or actually read my comic strip, you can see how great a difference the art styles are. If anything, it’s a hold over from animation and life drawing. I tend not to get too crazy when I’m trying to figure something - like clothing - out. I also tend not to get too silly with proportions/expressions out of respect to the models, though I did start to make them into the super tall and thin fashion caricatures you’d normally see if you went through a fashion design book.
The following is the last step in this particular process: Drawing one of them as a rabbit in the style of my strip. I present to you Kikka Bunny. -
I liked the other dress so much that I honestly left it up to chance. When I flipped a coin, I got tails. = )
There you have it. How I go from reference to design on one of my characters. Now to get back to work or else I’ll be late for a Sunday update!
