Breaking into Breaking News: UD alum Breanna Tritchka discusses life at a daily newspaper

By Hunter Mills

Breanna Tritchka graduated from UD in 2012 with a B.A. in English. Originally from Abiliene, Texas, she relocated to Longview last year in order to pursue a career as a Layout Designer with the Longview News-Journal. She lives there with her husband, Nathan, and their two children. On her last visit to Dallas, I was able to interview Breanna about how she got into the newspaper business. Read her story below.

You primarily work as a layout designer. How did you get into that?

I dabbled in it in high school. I did some projects like yearbook. After I designed the University Scholar for the English department, I realized that I wanted to stick with designing.

Getting a job at a newspaper is difficult. What was the best thing you did as an undergraduate, as far as helping your career? What would you tell new UD students to do if they want to follow in your footsteps?

Take up as many assignments as you can. I had to go asking. I went around asking who needed help. Getting as many things in my portfolio and on my resume as I could really was the difference. You have to hunt for those opportunities, because [the people looking] might not be advertising. You also need to make friends with as many people as you can because you never know who will be that connection for you. In the journalism business, a lot of it is who you know

You worked on The University News.  How many years were you there?

I was there all four years. I started out as a copy editor, just coming in one night a week. Pretty much, you know, the bottom of the rung. You come in, you look at the pages that are laid out, and then you leave. I got my basics there. Even at major newspapers—The Dallas Morning News, The New York Times—copyediting is the fundamentals. You need to know it. Knowing how to do that helped when I had to take AP editing tests at newspapers. Copyediting was a good initiation for me.

Did you have any writing or journalism mentors while you were at UD?

I absolutely loved working with my adjunct professor of Mass Media, Charles Brown. He worked at the Dallas Morning News. I really enjoyed the class that he taught and if I ever had questions he was always available giving me ways to improve. He was nice enough to let me use him as a reference and ended up being friends with the person I interviewed with at the Longview News-Journal.

You stayed in Irving for almost a year after graduation. What was it like moving to a new city?

It was scary. Moving to Longview meant moving outside of the bubble. At the same time, it was a new chapter and it was an adventure.

Walk me through what it’s like applying for newspaper jobs. How did you start?
Initially it was really difficult to get in. Everyone was saying they weren’t looking for a recent college graduate – they wanted someone with 3-5 years experience at a weekly newspaper. It got to the point where I was just looking for any sort of job that I could spin towards starting a journalism career. I took a job writing about golf. I knew nothing about golf. It was a freelance job, but it was something I was willing to do because I knew that I needed it on my resume. After 3-4 months I put it on my resume, and that’s when I started getting calls. I got three job offers, so I got to have my pick.
